Places to Visit and
Things to Do:
Kohukohu
The historic walk
takes you on a journey back through time. As you follow the map contained
in the historic walk brochure, you will find carefully placed wonderful
black and white pictures of how Kohukohu looked in the early days of the
settlement.
The Waterline Café
serves exquisite coffee and wonderful food. Mary Ellen and her team provide
the very best customer service as well as the great Friday night gatherings
which can end in an impromptu musical evening. Relax and unwind on the deck
over the water and enjoy the café’s perfect position on the Harbour.
Louisa Geddes
Gallery and Bed & Breakfast
will excite your artistic senses with her exquisite art work
and hospitality. The harbour views are to die for, your host superb and
with Holly the dog to welcome you too, you are assured of a wonderful
experience.
Village Arts
will undoubtedly provide
you with an opportunity to view a fantastic collection of local art work and
photography. Every collection is different, so be prepared to be amazed at
what you find there.
The Hokianga Ferry
to Rawene will provide
you with some truly amazing photo opportunities and the most amazing views
across the harbour to the Waima ranges, the little church at Motokaraka and
the ranges beyond. The ferry leaves the Kohukohu narrows approximately 3km
outside Kohukohu on the hour and returns from Rawene on the half hour.
Further down the
Harbour
Rawene
is another great place to visit for a swim on the little beach at high tide,
more art galleries, local shops and of course Historic Clendon House. There
is also a hotel, organic veggie store, liquor store and corner shop. The
boat shed café serves great food and coffee too.
Opononi and
Omapare share the most
beautiful views of the sand dune entrance to the Hokianga Harbour, along
with a visit to the little takeaway with Opo the dolphin on the roof for a
fish and chip lunch, your day will be complete.
Tane Mahuta
the oldest Kauri tree in New
Zealand, some 2000 years old, said not to be the largest Kauri, but
certainly the oldest. The size of this magnificent tree will amaze you, but
keep a look out for the two tall Kauri trees on either side of the one track
bridge named Darby and Joan.
